Nutrition Corner: Health Holiday Eating
Eating healthy during the Holiday Season is always a challenge but there are a few strategies to let you enjoy yourself, without all of the guilt.
- Bring your own food: Whether you're attending an office party or cookie-exchange with friends. Offer to bring a dish to share. This way, you're guaranteed to know there's one thin you can eat. (Check out our Holiday Recipe below!)
- Eat before you go out: Curb your appetite by eating a healthy snack or light meal before you go out so you don't attack the buffet table. Eat some healthy carbs (fruits or veggies), soup or some grains to fill you up.
- Limit your portion size and menu choices: Pick the smallest plate size available and be conscious of your food choices. A few small indulgences at each event can really add up. Pick one event to live it up and keep your healthy habits at the rest.
- Make your first drink water: Start the evening hydrated by by ordering a selzer water with lemon or lime and no one will be the wiser. If you do indulge, alternate any libations with a large glass of water in-between rounds.

Understanding the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare)
Are you trying to decipher how the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) is going to affect the healthcare coverage for you and your family? If so, you're not alone. We've gathered some resources to help you better understand the plan and coverage options to make the best decision possible.
And now the BIG QUESTION, will Obamacare cover Integrative Medicine? It's a very important question as a 2011 Consumer Reports survey showed that 38 million Americans make an excess of 300 million visits each year to Complimentary and Alternative Medicine specialists, including acupuncture, massage therapists and chiropractors.
There's some good news. In general, Chiropractic care WILL be covered under Obamacare provided that the state defined health care law accounts for coverage. (http://www.examiner.com/
Now, for the not-so-good news... California and Oregon, currently do not deem Chiropractic care to be an "essential health benefit". Because of this, their state plans do not have to cover Chiropractic services. This leaves patients that are covered under Obamacare the responsibility of covering these services out of pocket. So while we may not receive many newly insured patients in our office until Chiropractic is covered, fortunately, the majority of insurance patients at InnerMovement are already covered through their workplace and statistics are showing in favor of these plans staying the same with additional coverage for Maternity, Dental and Pediatric care.
In a nutshell, if you already have Chiropractic, Massage and/or Acupuncture benefits, you aren't likely to lose them. However it's a good idea to review your insurance policy yearly to make sure you're aware of your plan benefits.
If you do not already have coverage and will be participating in Obamacare, your benefits will be as follows:
- Chiropractic will not be covered until the State of California amends it's position on whether this is considered an "Essential Health Benefit".
- Acupuncture will be covered under "Essential Health Benefits" but only for certain conditions.
- Massage Therapy will not be covered.
BUT... not to worry,
InnerMovement has you covered.
We've partnered with a supplemental life insurance provider and will continue to offer cash discounts to those lacking sufficient healthcare coverage because we believe that EVERYONE has the right to access wellness care to be able to live a healthy, vibrant life.Friday, December 6, 2013
Healthy Holidays
The holidays are here! To celebrate this year, I visited my family. What a wonderful trip! It is so good to have done enough emotional clearing through N.E.T, meditation & body work, to be able to fully enjoy every member of my family (without the presence of my childhood wounds). A thought occurred to me when I was on the airplane home, watching the Flight Safety video. "Secure the oxygen mask on yourself before you help another with their oxygen supply". This visual, so clearly demonstrated on the airplane survival video inspired this month's message. We MUST make time for our own health before we do for others! Without our own emotional, physical, financial & spiritual foundation, we cannot effectively help others.
All year our newsletter is dedicated to empowering you with expertise, information, tools and resources to live to your optimal health potential! We pride ourselves on having an exceptional staff and offering only the best in non-surgical, drugless forms of health care. Revisit our newsletter & wellness library during your down time this holiday. And set a resolution in 2014 to set aside 1 hour each day "only for you"!
Especially given the upheaval of this past year and uncertainty of healthcare in the coming year. It is becoming more and more evident that our healthcare is up to us. Try visiting a Wellness Consultant and adding techniques like Chiropractic, Detoxification, Acupuncture and Therapeutic Massage as part of your wellness plan. These techniques focus on releasing stress, helping to restore balance, release toxins, drop weight & energize the body. We can no longer rely on a statistically failing health system, dependent on pharmaceu tical drugs & interventions. True health for yourself and your loved one's comes from education and making informed decisions not by following the crowd. Our services are unique because we find the true cause of your problem by listening, and get results while honoring the bodies innate wisdom. Until our next adjustment...

Understanding Alzheimer's Disease
Health & Wellness News |
NOVEMBER 2013 |
This month's newsletter topic is focused on understanding Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's is a relatively new disease of the mind that has been linked to many current trends in the US. Two of which are cholesterol lowering medications and low fat diet trends. Both of which decrease the amount of "good fat" available for your brain. The brain thrives on Omega 3 fatty acids (those found in grass fed protein sources, fish oil, olive oil, avocado, coconut oil etc). Without adequate amounts of Omega 3 "good fat", your brain starves and glucose metabolism suffers, which according to recent research, leads to Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's is also strongly linked with a build up of Aluminum in the system from various sources listed below. A thorough detox program, like the Three-Step Detox we offer at IMC, is an effective way to address buildup of Aluminum, as well as the many other chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis.
Please take the time to read this month's informative edition to help ensure your health and longevity, and be sure to share it with your loved ones too!
Until our next adjustment...

Coconut Oil: Food For Your Brain
Researchers are actively looking to Coconut Oil and it's positive effects for Alzheimer's patients. The human brain uses glucose for fuel. Most of the time our brains rely on glucose from carbohydrates, but if that isn't available - because we haven't eaten anything for a while or because we're eating almost no carbohydrates - then our brain cells can switch to using the energy from our fat stores. This energy comes in the form of small molecules called ketones.
Through brain scans, Alzheimer's researchers have found that as the disease progresses and gets worse, sections of the brain lose their ability to properly process sugar into energy. When this occurs, the brain begins to use its own cells for energy, causing severe deterioration and dementia.
Coconut oil may help by boosting the brain's energy supply as it is rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). When the human body metabolizes MCTs, it creates ketone Beta-hydroxybutyrate. This ketone helps to protect the neurons in the brain and provide energy to cells (much like glucose). The ketones found in coconut oil provide a fuel to the brain that is thought to be very beneficial to those suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's.
How to get the benefits of coconut oil into your diet?
* Take 4 teaspoons per day.
Where to buy? Whole Foods, Trader Joes & most health food stores

The Health of our Children
Health & Wellness News
|
SEPTEMBER 2013
|
Greetings!
This month, our wellness topics speak to the health of our children and should be shared with every parent we know. The younger generation in our country faces health risks of epidemic proportions, sadly from a system that should be protecting them. American children are given more prescription medications than any other developed country and the U.S. list of recommended vaccines is larger than any other country. Unfortunately, the state of health for U.S. Children isn't topping any lists. According to the CDC, infant mortality rates are higher than most other developed countries (ranking 31st in 2012) and appears to be worsening. A Washington Post article (dated 01/09/13) shows that our infant mortality rate is twice that of countries like Japan and Sweden. Despite having the most expensive healthcare system, the United States ranks last overall compared to six other industrialized countries. Why?
This very informational edition is jam-packed with critical research and explanations on what we are doing wrong with our kids. It also gives ideas and insights into how to make some positive changes toward the health of our children. We've also included some helpful tips for clearing up Acne naturally as Acne medications are one of the most widely used prescriptions given to teenagers, despite their known risks to the liver. If you have a teen suffering from problematic skin, we now offer holistic skin care that combines topical skin treatments with Acupuncture. The treatment is also highly effective on hormonal skin issues experienced at any age and on special through October.
I hope this edition inspires each of us to rethink any and all medications and for parents to research alternatives for their children. We urge you to dedicate time to reading this edition in its entirety including our recommended links, watching the documentary films and sharing it with those you love. Until our next adjustment...
