The negative effects of over-the-counter pain medications

Glendale California Chiropractor, Heidi Fennell, D.C., FICPA
This month our focus is on educating our patients on the potentially negative effects of over-the-counter pain medications, especially acetaminophen. When we have aches and pains, isn't taking Acetaminophen a very safe and good idea?  What about when our child is teething, or just after a vaccine? Should we give her Infants' Tylenol to relieve the pain? Research shows that Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol and more than 600 medications, causes toxicity, cell death and liver failure.  We have provided research in this newsletter to educate you on the potential side effects of this drug that has been marketed as "safe for the whole family".  But, our deeper message this month is to remind you that if you are having pain, seek solutions - not simply a way to mask the symptoms.  Medications don't heal, they mask symptoms, modulate symptoms, and at best, attempt to ward off future symptoms.

Medications do not solve the imbalance that the pain is representing in the body. To heal, one must remove blockages, restore flow, and bring balance to the failing system. Chiropractic restores nerve flow, brings balance to the spine and nervous system, and ultimately allows for the body to heal itself.  Acupuncture restores balance to the body so that the organ systems are working in harmony allowing the body to heal more effectively.  Massage restores movement of the tissues and nutrition removes toxicity and restores depleted cells. All of the techniques at InnerMovement are HIGHLY effective in treating pain. Before you reach for the pain medication, pick up the phone and call our office. All of the InnerMovement staff are passionate about helping the whole family live a pain free, vibrant life! Until our next adjustment...

Acupuncture & Weight Loss

Obesity has no singular cause. Genetic, age, lifestyle, constitution, emotion, and diet are all factors that contribute to the likelihood of obesity. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the foods we crave depend on the imbalances in our internal system. Unfortunately, eating unnatural foods, the wrong types of foods, or excessive quantities throws the entire system out of balance.

Acupuncture can help normalize the system, and aid weight loss when accompanied by proper diet and exercise. In a Russian study of obese children it was found that regular Acupuncture treatments resulted in the normalization of blood and serum levels, decrease of overall body mass and fatty tissue content, and increased exercise performance abilities. In other studies, conclusive evidence was offered to show needling of auricular points helped to lower the appetite, increase satiety with less food, as well as lower insulin and lipid levels.

Treating Endometriosis with Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that each life force has an innate energy flowing throughout its form. This is called "qi" and qi is also believed to move the blood.   It is the liver's job to maintain the free flow of qi. In Chinese medicine, the uterus and the liver are closely related as the liver, spleen, and kidney channels run through the pelvis and all can effect menstruation. Stagnant qi is associated with liver depression, which is intimately associated with the menstrual cycle and almost always manifests as some menstrual-related problem.

In TCM, the body comprises points located on pathways at which the qi, traveling through them can be manipulated and therapeutically adjusted. This is how acupuncture can treat endometriosis symptoms along with Chinese herbal medicine.

It has been shown that acupuncture treatment may specifically be of benefit in people with endometriosis by:
  • providing pain relief
  • reducing inflammation
  • regulating levels of prostaglandins
  • combining acupuncture with Chinese herbal medicine for endometriosis has been shown to provide benefits
In a NIH study published in 2011, Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine provided:  the total effective rate ('cured', 'significantly effective' or 'effective') for auricular acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine was 91.9% and 60%, respectively.
Hopefully this information demonstrates that Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine treat effectively: painful menstruation, menstruation irregularities, amenorrhea, PMS, lower abdominal pain, any endometriosis symptoms and infertility.

If you want to learn more about how Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine can help you, please contact us to book your appointment with Dr. Monica to take advantage of this month's special offer.

National Awareness Month for Endometriosis

March is National Awareness Month for Endometriosis. It's currently estimated that 5 million women in the U.S. suffer from this condition.  It is very painful and can lead to infertility, repetitive surgeries, and even hysterectomy. Women deserve natural solutions for this often debilitating illness.. Unfortunately, traditional medical intervention merely treats the symptoms of Endometriosis using birth control pills, surgeries, and pain medications. That is where we come in!

Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine have been shown to be very effective in treating Endometriosis.  A licensed Acupuncturist can find the root cause of this imbalance by using age old techniques that identify areas of hormone imbalance.  Diet modification and abdominal massage have both shown to be very effective in helping this condition.

If you know anyone that suffers from Endometriosis, please share this post. It is full of research and helpful information for these woman.  Also, it is important to mention that ANY hormone imbalance: PMS, Menopause, Ovarian Cysts etc, can be helped immensely by Acupuncture & Herbal Therapy. There are many women suffering unnecessarily.  We are here to help!  We just need all of YOU to let the women in your life know about these effective therapies!
Until our next adjustment...

Spring Greetings, Acupuncture for treating Seasonal Allergies.

MARCH 2014

Greetings!

As Spring rolls in, the flowers bloom, the grass grows and the wind picks up.  Most of us enjoy the freshness in the air and the renewing of the season, but those who suffer from seasonal allergies dread this time of year, as their sinus congestion, running nose, headaches and asthma make them miserable. Often patients report that  their drugstore remedies only offer temporary relief so they resort to steroid inhalers or strong antihistamines.  These medications may bring temporary relief but they don't provide a solution.  That is why I am dedicating this issue to educating the public on ways to bring the body into harmony naturally and with no side effects while improving your allergies AND your overall health.

In a study published in the respected journal Annals of Internal Medicine, participants who received the Acupuncture treatments in conjunction with their antihistamines showed a greater improvement in their allergy symptoms and required less use of antihistamines compared to the other groups.  And beyond this double-blind placebo based study there are years of anecdotal evidence in Eastern countries, as well as in the West, on the effectiveness of Acupuncture in treating seasonal allergies.

We invite you to read the information in our posts this month to get an understanding of the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  It is a unique approach, but because of this, Acupuncture can achieve results that other therapies cannot.  There is a list below outlining the many other conditions Acupuncture can help with.  And contrary to what one might think, the needles are thin and painless and the energy created in an Acupuncture session is very pleasant and relaxing.

highly recommend Acupuncture and want ALL of my patients to heal naturally, which is why I have brought this ancient healing technique to InnerMovement.  Acupuncture offers healing in areas that Chiropractic and Massage do not, however it can serve as integral component of a comprehensive wellness plan.  Acupuncture is a wellness therapy that I entrust my own health, that of my husband and daughter, my staff & many of my patients  with.  I hope you'll consider adding this amazing therapy to your healing regimen.

Until our next adjustment...

Wellness between Partners

This month at InnerMovement we are focusing on Wellness between Partners.  It has become increasingly apparent over the years in my own relationships as well as in witnessing those of my patients, that the impact we have on one another can be powerfully uplifting OR simply draining.  We would like to offer ways to be a positive influence on our partners wellness this month and always!

Start by getting your partner to participate with you on the 3 Week Detox.  When done together, this can jumpstart weight loss and promote healthy eating for the whole family.  Treat your partner and yourself to a Couples Massage (on special this month!) or register for our Couples Massage Workshop.  Get your partner signed up for their first visit with our Chiropractor or Acupuncturist!  The healing benefits of these techniques not only eliminate pain and stress but restore balance to the muscles, nerves and organ systems.

Health is our most precious commodity, don't wait for it to be lost before realizing the effect poor health can have on those you love.  BE proactive and BE a powerfully uplifting influence for your Valentine's health this month & ongoing!

Until our next adjustment...

CNN Op Ed Piece on "Holistic Ways to Fight Pain, and Win" --- Dr. Heidi weighs in

I'm sure that many of you saw an article on CNN.com entitled, "Holistic ways to fight pain, and win" written by Summer Suleiman, Special to CNN, published on Friday, January 10, 2014. (http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/10/health/secrets-pain-free-life/index.html?hpt=hp_bn13)

I'm so happy to hear that Ms. Suleiman has found a way out of her pain.  And even better, that she has found solutions that will not harm her in any way and was so inspired to share her experience on CNN.com.  As a doctor of Chiropractic and Wholistic Health Professional, I stand by my oath of "First Do No Harm" into every aspect of my practice and as part of core objectives for patient offerings at InnerMovement Chiropractic & Wellness.  Our entire team works to provide patients with health and wellness solutions that have little-to-no side effects and work to harmonize the body, not simply mask symptoms.

In reading Ms. Suleiman's post, I felt the same level of excitement that I do each time my patients declare they are pain-free and feeling better than they thought possible after dealing with chronic pain or illness for decades.  This is truly rewarding through and through!  In my experience, working almost exclusively with pain over the past 10 years, inflammation has proven to be a TOP culprit!  Sometimes the cause is autoimmune or injury related but MOSTLY increased inflammation is due to sedentary lifestyle, stress & the Standard American Diet.  I second Dr. Ghorbani and Ms. Suleiman's recommendations to increase exercise, hours of rest and to decrease stress and eat pro-inflammatory foods.  I also would add that participating in a thorough medically managed detoxification program is extremely helpful in down-regulating pain and inflammation.

To manage and reduce stress, I have found that both NeuroEmotional Technique (NET) and Acupuncture technique to be very helpful.  NET is a brilliant technique that allows a practitioner to locate the most prominent stressor as well as locate the organ weakness caused by that stressor.  Stress really will make a person sick and is documented clearly in the research as a trigger for pain and inflammation. NET is cutting edge, and I have found it to be very effective in helping patients manage stress.

Acupuncture has accumulated a lot of scientific research on its benefits in helping with anxiety and depression.  I also recommend Acupuncture for patients with inflammation caused by stress and patients with fibromyalgia or extreme systemic inflammation.  It is remarkably beneficial.  And if exercise is difficult for patients who suffer from joint pain and muscle weakness, I employ structural balancing techniques like Chiropractic Care and Massage Therapy to restore integrity to the musculoskeletal system and get them moving.

It's encouraging to see that more people are turning towards holistic means to improve their health and thus, their quality of life. I feel blessed to be chosen by my patients to provide solutions for their health concerns and be part of the wellness community.

If you or someone you know is suffering from pain or simply wants to optimize their health, please feel free to contact InnerMovement Chiropractic & Wellness as we'd love to be part of your success story!

Healthy Holidays

The holidays are here!  To celebrate this year, I visited my family.  What a wonderful trip!  It is so good to have done enough emotional clearing through N.E.T, meditation & body work, to be able to fully enjoy every member of my family (without the presence of my childhood wounds).  A thought occurred to me when I was on the airplane home, watching the Flight Safety video.  "Secure the oxygen mask on yourself before you help another with their oxygen supply".  This visual, so clearly demonstrated on the airplane survival video inspired this month's message.  We MUST make time for our own health before we do for others! Without our own emotional, physical, financial & spiritual foundation, we cannot effectively help others.

All year our newsletter is dedicated to empowering you with expertise, information, tools and resources to live to your optimal health potential!  We pride ourselves on having an exceptional staff and offering only the best in non-surgical, drugless forms of health care.  Revisit our newsletter & wellness library during your down time this holiday.  And set a resolution in 2014 to set aside 1 hour each day "only for you"!

Especially given the upheaval of this past year and uncertainty of healthcare in the coming year.  It is becoming more and more evident that our healthcare is up to us. Try visiting a Wellness Consultant and adding techniques like Chiropractic, Detoxification, Acupuncture and Therapeutic Massage as part of your wellness plan.  These techniques focus on releasing stress, helping to restore balance, release toxins, drop weight & energize the body.  We can no longer rely on a statistically failing health system, dependent on pharmaceutical drugs & interventions.  True health for yourself and your loved one's comes from education and making informed decisions not by following the crowd.  Our services are unique because we find the true cause of your problem by listening, and get results while honoring the bodies innate wisdom.  Until our next adjustment...

Wishing you and yours the Healthiest of Holidays,

Holistic Treatments Proven to Benefit Physical & Emotional Results of Cancer

Holistic Treatments Proven to Benefit Physical & Emotional Results of Cancer

Studies have shown that Holistic Medicine can help alleviate the pain and side effects of cancer treatment and speed up the recovery process.

CHIROPRACTIC:
Chiropractic care successfully treats the joint pain and headaches typically experienced during cancer treatment.  In addition, Chiropractic helps restore nerve function and boost the immune system to aid in recovery.

MASSAGE:
The healing touch of massage not only helps reduce the anxiety and depression associated with breast cancer by releasing dopamine, it's proven to aid in pain relief.  In a study conducted at the University of Minnesota, massage lowered the need for pain medication.  Massage also boost the body's natural immune system.

ACUPUNCTURE:
Acupuncture alleviates the nausea associated with chemotherapy.  It is also being used in hospitals and cancer treatment centers to relieve pain, reduce the hot flashes, reduce arm swelling and other side-effects of cancer treatment.
For more information on the benefits of Holistic Medicine, please ask Dr. Heidi who can develop a custom treatment plan for you.

Treating Acne with Acupuncture

Treating Acne with Acupuncture

New research shows that Acupuncture is an effective treatment for Acne.  43 Acupuncture acne trials with approximately 3,500 patients was reviewed. In the studies, several types of acne were investigated: vulgaris, papulopustular, inflammatory, adolescent and polymorphic. The researchers discovered that when acupuncture is added to a therapeutic regime, it synergistically enhances the medicinal benefits of the treatment protocol and leads to superior patient outcomes.

If you or someone you know suffers from Acne or Hormonal Skin Issues, encourage them to incorporate Acupuncture into their treatment.  (And it's on special at InnerMovement through October!)
