Thank You for your Generosity!

Sincere gratitude to all that donated a gift, toy, gift card or even a positive thought/prayer for our family in need this holiday season!

Together we gave the boys everything on their Santa lists & more! Because of the Ralph's & Target gift card donations, the family will be able to eat a very nice holiday meal.  And all the pampering and inspirational items given to the mother will help keep her strong during this trying time in her life.

Please take time to read the message of gratitude below and feel good that you've helped a family in need this holiday season!

And let it inspire you to continue to have a grateful & generous heart all year long!

"The more we help another feel good, the more that person can feel God.  The more we feel good, the more we can feel God.  The more we feel God, the more life will be good & ALL we benefit."

In sincere gratitude,

Dr. Heidi

Dear Dr. Heidi,
Last Friday I gave the mother the gifts from your precious patients.  She started crying and said "I just can't believe it!!!"  The mother went on to tell me she was not able to afford the bus ticket to go with her family to Nevada for Christmas, and was planning on staying home.  She said she had only wished to
buy a little Christmas tree for the boys, but didn't know how she was even going to do that.  I wish you could have seen her face when she put the gifts in her car.  She was so overjoyed!!!

Words just aren't adequate to express my appreciation for giving a very needy family Christmas this year.  I know that this is a life-changing experience for them.  May the Lord richly bless you and all those who gave from their hearts this holiday season.

With love and gratitude,
Social Worker from Bienvenidos Children's Center

About Bienvenidos Children's Center:
Bienvenidos Children's Center, located in East Los Angeles, covers a wide geographical area in the East L.A. area where many of the families are low in resources, living in crowded living situations with children sleeping on the floor, eating poor diets, are often sick, have little clothing, and many other challenges.  Due to the extreme need for services in our area, there is usually a 2-4 month waiting list for services to get started and many of the children are court-referred due to domestic violence situations. Referrals also come from schools where their regular counseling services are just not enough to address frequent disruptive behavior in the classroom. Some of the children suffer from post-traumatic stress due to witnessing extreme violence in the home, and others are very aggressive in their behavior.  Many of the teens struggle with drug abuse, with the use of dangerous substances, such as inhalants.

As a nonprofit, community-based organization, Bienvenidos fulfills its mission by delivering a comprehensive array of services that empower children and their families, are culturally responsive, and are effective models of prevention and intervention.  This holistic approach to healing families is reflected in such services as foster care, mental health therapy, community health clinics, school readiness, youth development, family preservation programs, parenting classes, substance abuse and domestic violence prevention and treatment.

SINUS CONGESTION: NATURAL CURES

Neti Pot, a natural cure for sinus congestion.
Neti Pot
Neti Pot:  A neti pot is a small teapot like container filled with warm water and fine, ionized salt (some people use only warm water) to soothe irritated sinuses, clear nasal congestion, and even wash away allergens that may lodge in your nasal passages.

Massage: a facial massage which may help with nasal and sinus congestion. Use finger pressure and subtle movements to massage nasal cavities below the eyes. Also massage your forehead.  (Check out our new Cold Stone Massage which is great for Sinus Pain/Pressure & Headaches - on special this month!)

Oil of Oregano: this age-old remedy is amazing for opening up the sinuses, soothing colds & allergies, and fighting bacteria.  Take at the first signs of congestion, sore throat or allergies.  Oil of Oregano can be found at any nutrition store in a liquid or tablet form.

Echinacea, Vit A, C, E, Zinc & Selenium:  All are very well known to boost immunity & fight off colds/flu.  (OurBiotics BioProtect is loaded with these vitamins & minerals - on special this month!)

Steam Inhalation:  Boil filtered water and a chopped white onion in a pot, then carefully move the pot to your kitchen table.  Cover your head with a towel, close your eyes and breath in & out through your nose for 5 minutes.  The chopped onion and steam will quickly cause sinuses to drain.  Repeat 3 x day until flu subsides.

Reduce dairy & sugar: milk and milk-products can cause a thickening of mucous in your body. Sugar decreases immune function while feeding harmful bacteria. Avoid during times of sickness.

Hot Liquids:  now is the time to enjoy your favorite hot herbal teas and broth-based soups. Chicken soup truly is the best way to kill a cold. If mom is not around, find a restaurant that serves it with lots of garlic and onion.  Add lemon for increased flu buster benefits!

FLU SHOT 101

As we approach the winter months, the Center for Disease Control begins their promotional campaign for the Flu Shot.  What the CDC doesn't disclose is the list of the ingredients that includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Ethylene Glycol (antifreeze)
  • Phenol (carbolic acid)
  • Formaldehyde (a known carcinogen)
  • Aluminum (associated with Alzheimers & seizures)
  • Thimerosal (a mercury-based disinfectant & preservative that can result in brain injury or autoimmune disease)
  • Neomycin & Steptomycin (used in antibiotics and potential allergens)
The effectiveness of the Flu Shot has been questioned as in the Lancet Infectious Diseases 2011 report on the efficacy of the flu shot which showed it as low as 60%.

Also, according to the CDC, 1 in every 100,000 people will develop Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), an illness characterized by fever, nerve damage, and muscle weakness.  Consider these odds when CDC's goal of vaccinating 80% of the U.S. Population.

All medications and vaccines have potential side effects and we strongly encourage you to do your own research and talk to your doctor.  The health and wellness of you and your family depends on making informed decisions.

For more information and do your research, please see Dr. Heidi's Recommended Reading Links (below).

Strengthen and Protect your Immune System this Holiday Season

Greetings!
dr heidi
Dr. Heidi
It's that time of year again when we are around more people, shopping and celebrating the Holiday Season.  We are eating more sweets, drinking more alcohol, getting less sleep and experiencing more stress.  All of these activities lower our immune response.  This lowered immune response, coupled with being exposed to more cold and flu bugs creates the 'perfect storm' for us to get sick.  This year, I encourage each of you to be smart and take advantage of our many tips on how you can naturally boost your immune defense with nutrition & herbs, adjustments & exercise. Make an educated decision regarding the Flu Shot - do the risks outweigh the benefits for you and your family?  Consciously choose to eat 1/2 a cookie instead of 3, drink 1/2 glass of wine in lei of a full one, make sure you nap the day after you've stayed out late, and learn to say "No" to things that will add stress, and "Yes" to things that bring joy and not overwhelm.

Remember that if you strengthen and protect your immune system, you will not get sick no matter how many bugs you are exposed to.  Make it your goal to have the healthiest & happiest holiday season ever.  The choice is yours.

Until our next adjustment....

Two New Movies Focus on Chiropractic Care

Greetings!

dr heidi
Dr. Heidi
With health care reform being a hot topic lately in the media, I want to bring your attention to two documentaries that recently hit the big screen. "Doctored" which focuses on the benefits of Chiropractic Care, while examining a wide range of medical, political and insurance topics.  And "Escape Fire: The Fight To Rescue American Healthcare" looks at ways to help cure the ailing healthcare system, including greater use of alternative healing.  These documentaries bring the message of WELLNESS to the big screen nationwide, illustrating that our current system of healthcare care is not working.  Our nation is the sickest it has ever been, with health in the U.S. ranking as low as some third world countries according to CDC (Center for Disease Control) statistics.

As October is National Chiropractic month, I cannot think of a better time for these films to be released.  Both films show that Alternative Medicine, namely Chiropractic, offers real WELLNESS solutions.  Chiropractors have been spreading the message of WELLNESS since the start of our profession back in 1895.  I hope watching these documentaries will inspire you to begin getting consistent adjustments and actively participate in your health.

Until our next adjustment....

Gastrointestinal Health

Greetings!

dr heidi
Dr. Heidi
This month our focus is on Gastrointestinal Health.  The GI tract serves as 70% of our immune health.  This is because the pH in our stomach, as well as helpful bacteria in our digestive tract, serve to kill off most of the bad bugs that enter our system orally.  If our stomach pH is off balance or we don't ingest enough helpful probiotic bacteria, our immune system as well as our ability to breakdown food efficiently are lessened.  When considering if your digestive tract is healthy, first ask yourself how many firm bowel movements you have in a day.  If the answer is 1 to 2, you are on the right track. If the answer is less or more, or if your stool is loose or tough to pass, you may want to begin looking at improving your GI health.  Also, if you have indigestion, nausea, cramping or gas on a regular basis or if you get sick often, these are also signs of an unhealthy or imbalanced GI tract.

Increasing water intake, eating green leafy vegetables daily, eliminating ALL simple carbohydrates and supplementing with a high quality probiotic bacteria daily will have a very beneficial impact on your digestive health. Ensuring that you have proper nerve supply to the stomach, small intestine and colon is also key.  See the research posted in the previous post explaining how misaligned vertebrae cause nerve pressure to your vital organs.  I regularly treat infants with constipation and adults with various forms of GI distress by adjusting the correlating vertebrae.  This relieves the nerve pressure allowing the organ to function optimally.  If you have any digestive issues or concerns we packed this issue with resources that will help, and as always, feel free to talk with me on your next visit if you still have questions!

Until our next adjustment....

CHIROPRACTIC & DIGESTIVE HEALTH

Studies show that over 40% of doctor visits are for gastrointestinal problems, with complaints ranging from irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal bloating, and diarrhea to constipation. Often there are no answers to these problems because of a lack of diagnosed anatomical or chemical defects.

As early as 1921, it was discovered that spinal abnormalities could cause stomach, esophagus, duodenum, and intestinal disorders.  And the famous researcher R. Maigne discovered the releasing stress from the nervous system helped digestive pains and pseudo-ulcers.

Clinical experience reveals chiropractic helps relieve abdominal pain, digestive problems, dyspepsia, and epigiastric distress.  A large study involving 385 chiropractors in seven countries who collected information on 5,607 patients found that many reported improvements in digestion with chiropractic care. Chiropractic care has relieved abdominal pain, stomach ulcers, gastritis, colitis, and spastic constipation.

The gut has so many nerve cells contained in the tissue lining of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon, it is often referred to as the second brain or "abdominal brain".  In a healthy state, sensory nerves carry information to the brain however interference with these control signals can often be the result of neuropathy (changes in nerve pathology) caused by misalignment of the vertebrae that house and protect these delicate nerves.

Thus by correcting the underlying cause, vertebral misalignment, with chiropractic adjustments can restore proper communication between the brain and the gut, and may reduce or eliminate many of these gastrointestinal problems.

For more information on how Chiropractic can address your digestive health, please consult with Dr. Heidi or Dr. Broosan.

Pro-Chiropractic Documentary Coming to a Theater Near You Soon

A soon-to-be released documentary called "Doctored" (originally titled "Medical, Inc.") takes a hard look at our health care system and how the medical / pharmaceutical "monopoly" has controlled health care for far too long. The film also suggests that alternatives - first and foremost, chiropractic care - should be getting much more attention while drugs and surgery should be getting much less. Here are a few soundbites from Jeff Hays, executive producer of this exciting documentary:
  • "The fundamental theme [of the documentary] is that you have to be in charge of your own health – even if you don't want to. ... Once you decide you have to take care of yourself, the question becomes, OK, how do I do that? ... That's where the story comes in – Is there a way of being healthier? Why isn't it more popular? Why don't we know more about it?"
  • "The way it's presented in the film is to consider chiropractic first, drugs second, surgery third. What happens with most people is drugs first, surgery second and if everything fails, then I might go to the chiropractor. [We need to get] chiropractic as a consideration."
  • "On a personal level, what I didn't know (and what I hope we can communicate to viewers) is that chiropractors have a philosophy of health that is uniquely needed today. We have just completely given ourselves over to the drug model, to the point that it's not even questioned; it's what you do."
  • "We premiere the film Sept. 21 in New York at the Village East theater and then our L.A. premiere is a week later in Santa Monica, on the Promenade. Also on the 28th we will open in Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Austin [Texas] and Detroit. ... If we can then have a successful box office in New York and then follow it with strong box offices in those other seven cities, then we'll be a nationwide release."
Your doctor of chiropractic can tell you more about the medical monopoly, the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and the benefits of chiropractic and other forms of natural, drug-free health care. read more

Emotional Stress and our Health

Greetings!

dr heidi
Dr. Heidi

This month I'd like to speak about emotional stress and the role it plays in our health. Research shows that acute episodes or prolonged periods of stress negatively effect our health.  We all know we are more likely to get sick when we are under a lot of stress.  What most of us don't know is how to effectively address our emotions so that they don't build stress in our bodies creating ill health.

A healthy emotional state is a state where emotions flow freely.  This means we feel our emotions as they arise than express or allow them to move through us like a river. When an emotion creates stress in us, it is because we have not experienced the emotion fully and allowed it to move.  Instead we hold the emotion inside (anger, sadness, fear..) which builds tension causing our cells stagnate.  It has been said that repressed anger is acid on the soul but anger expressed in a healthy way can be fuel for change.  That sadness is sweet but only when expressed otherwise it turns inward and becomes depression.  That fear is necessary for in facing it you grow courage.  And happiness when felt to its depth becomes bliss.

When we allow ourselves to feel the full spectrum of emotions in a healthy way it can enrich our lives and create depth in us.  If we simply ignore and devalue our emotional state, it is guaranteed to have detrimental effects on one's health.  This is why I not only utilize Neuro Emotional Technique in my treatments, but emphasize the importance of daily prayer/meditation/mindfulness to address the daily buildup of stress.  I'm also happy to share the daily practices I use to help cope with the stressors in my life.  And introduce you to the Meditation retreats I attend regularly that have been paramount in my personal healing process.
Until our next adjustment....

TIPS FOR PAIN-FREE TRAVEL

Traveling can be a pain in the neck - literally!  Planes, trains & automobiles can also wreak havoc on our backs.  Here are a few tips to help reduce pain while traveling:

 1.  Spinal support:  When traveling for long period in a car, plane or train, place a rolled towel or small pillow in the curve of your lower back and place a U-shaped neck pillow or rolled towel around your neck. This will help you maintain better posture, which is critical to maintaining normal curves in your back.

2. Stay hydrated:  One of the most basic, yet common, causes of pain is dehydration. Not having enough fluid in the body to keep the body cool, the blood moving, the muscles supple and the tendons relaxed.

3.  Baggage handling:  Try to pack only what you need and keep stress off the shoulders by utilizing luggage with wheels.  Also, be mindful of your posture when lifting bags into the overhead bins or from baggage claim carousels.

4.  Get some rest:  Hotel pillows can often be the source of a sore neck in the morning.  Travel with your own pillow or ask for extras when you check in.  You can also use a pillow (or folded over towel) in between your knees.

5.  Keep the blood flowing: On long flights, be sure to stand up for a few minutes and doing some light stretching, twisting or bending will help keep you limber, relaxed and the blood moving in and out of the muscles.

Be sure to check out our "Retail Deal" this month to save 10% on any of our posture tools and... Bon Voyage!

THE IMPORTANCE OF HYDRATION

water splash drop
Two-thirds of the human body is made up of water. Every cell and organ depends on water to perform essential functions.  The water in your body performs the following functions:

  • Removes waste and toxins
  • Transports nutrients and oxygen
  • Controls heart rate and blood pressure
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Lubricates joints
  • Protects organs and tissue, including the eyes, ears, and heart
  • Creates saliva
How to stay hydrated:
Drink lots of fluids. Drinking at least eight cups of water each day is a good rule of thumb, according to the American Dietetic Association.
Eat foods with high water content.  Many foods contain water and can help replenish lost fluids. Choose foods like lettuce, cucumber, melons, and broccoli.
Avoid foods and drinks that may contribute to dehydration.  Beverages with sugar and/or caffeine (such as fruit juice, soda, and coffee) can dehydrate the body.

ICE or HEAT FOR PAIN?

The rule to follow is if an area is red, swollen, inflamed, or if it's an acute injury, meaning an injury that just occurred, we want to cool the area down with an ICE PACK to prevent any inflammation.

NOTE:  to avoid an ice burn, do not apply ice directly onto the skin.  Instead run a tea towel or washcloth under the tap, wring it out, and wrap the icepack (or bag of frozen peas) before applying to the skin.

HEAT will generally be used to prepare a body part or a portion of your arm or leg for exercise. It helps in increasing blood flow or circulation, increasing tissue elasticity or flexibility, and it will just help warm up or prepare the body part to accept the exercise or the stretching that the therapist will be doing to the area.

If you have more questions, please feel free to inquire with one of our Massage Therapists or Chiropractors.

Independence from Pain

Greetings!

dr heidi
Dr. Heidi

In honor of the 4th of July Holiday celebrated this month, I would like each of us to declare our Independence from Pain. This does not mean that by simply making a conscious declaration we can be free from ALL pain. That would be naïve. But what we can do is commit to being proactive with our current state of health with the intent to be as pain free as we possibly can. And we can commit to preventive measures in the form of a healthy lifestyle to avoid pain that could be in our future. Attached you will find a Declaration For A Pain-Free Life (click HERE). Keep our men healthy

Dr. Heidi

The latest report, published by in the Journal of the American Medicine said, "Men have caught up to women with respect to their prevalence of obesity...We continue to see an inching up of obesity among males."

In honor of Father's Day I'd like to dedicate this newsletter to helping change this trend and hope to educate the men in our lives toward better health!

One important research discovery is the connection between consuming wheat and weight gain, diabetes and ill health.  Important distinctions are being made in science recognizing that the wheat your grandmother used to bake her bread is dramatically different from the one we are consuming today.  The wheat found in the U.S. today is a scientifically engineered food product developed in the last 50 years.  This type of wheat is being proven to be very unhealthy yet most Americans consume 55 lbs of it per year!!!  And while filling up with "fattening, inflammatory, addictive" bread and bread products (pasta, crackers, pastries etc) we eat less and less fiber-filled fruits & vegetables.  This often leads to high cholesterol and the use of cholesterol lowering drugs (statins).  The FDA is now acknowledging that these drugs cause; liver problems AND type 2 diabetes perpetuating a downward spiral of weight gain & ill health.
On the flip side of this research, a study has just been published that Chiropractic adjustments in men increase brain glucose metabolism,  resulting in lower stress levels, more relaxed cervical muscle tone as well as decreasing their risk of Alzheimers, ADHD, OCD and Diabetes.  (For more information, be sure to check out my recommended reading links below.)
My personal hope is that we can create some practical ways to keep our men healthy.  Getting off wheat, maintaining a healthy weight, making informed decisions regarding the use of statin drugs and getting our men adjusted are proven to be important steps!
Until our next adjustment....
