Understanding Alzheimer's Disease

Health & Wellness News
NOVEMBER 2013

This month's newsletter topic is focused on understanding Alzheimer's Disease.  Alzheimer's is a relatively new disease of the mind that has been linked to many current trends in the US.  Two of which are cholesterol lowering medications and low fat diet trends.  Both of which decrease the amount of "good fat" available for your brain.  The brain thrives on Omega 3 fatty acids (those found in grass fed protein sources, fish oil, olive oil, avocado, coconut oil etc).  Without adequate amounts of Omega 3 "good fat", your brain starves and glucose metabolism suffers, which according to recent research, leads to Alzheimer's.

Alzheimer's is also strongly linked with a build up of Aluminum in the system from various sources listed below.  A thorough detox program, like the Three-Step Detox we offer at IMC, is an effective way to address buildup of Aluminum, as well as the many other chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis.

Please take the time to read this month's informative edition to help ensure your health and longevity, and be sure to share it with your loved ones too!

Until our next adjustment...

Coconut Oil: Food For Your Brain

Researchers are actively looking to Coconut Oil and it's positive effects for Alzheimer's patients. The human brain uses glucose for fuel. Most of the time our brains rely on glucose from carbohydrates, but if that isn't available - because we haven't eaten anything for a while or because we're eating almost no carbohydrates - then our brain cells can switch to using the energy from our fat stores. This energy comes in the form of small molecules called ketones.

Through brain scans, Alzheimer's researchers have found that as the disease progresses and gets worse, sections of the brain lose their ability to properly process sugar into energy. When this occurs, the brain begins to use its own cells for energy, causing severe deterioration and dementia.

Coconut oil may help by boosting the brain's energy supply as it is rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). When the human body metabolizes MCTs, it creates ketone Beta-hydroxybutyrate. This ketone helps to protect the neurons in the brain and provide energy to cells (much like glucose). The ketones found in coconut oil provide a fuel to the brain that is thought to be very beneficial to those suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's.

How to get the benefits of coconut oil into your diet?

* Take 4 teaspoons per day.
Where to buy?  Whole Foods, Trader Joes & most health food stores

Lifestyle Choices That Reduce The Risk Of Breast Cancer:

Lifestyle Choices That Reduce The Risk Of Breast Cancer:

  • Breastfeeding:  may play a role in prevention and the longer you breastfeed, the greater the benefit.  A recent study conducted in Spain showed that women who breastfeed for longer than 6 months had a gain in life expectancy of 10 years versus women who did not breastfeed.
  • Birth control: studies show that women who have taken oral birth control have a slightly higher risk.  This risk is diminished after women stop taking birth control pills..
  • Smoking:  there is evidence of a direct link between smoking and breast cancer.
  • Alcohol consumption:  a direct link has been proven between alcohol drinking and breast cancer.  This risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed.
  • Overweight or Obesity: being overweight after menopause increases the risk as after menopause, most of a women's estrogen comes from fat cells.  Having more fat tissue after menopause increases your risk for breast cancer.
  • Poor diet:  it's widely documented that eating a diet low in fresh fruits and vegetables, and high in sugar, processed or fatty foods, increases your risk.
  • Reduce Estrogen in your dietresearch links high estrogen exposure to increased risk. Most people don't know that there are estrogen-mimicking synthetic hormones in beef, chicken and eggs.  Buy hormone-free meats and eggs and reduce intake of unfermented soy products as these increase estrogen in the body as well.
  • Vitamin D Deficiency:  a deficiency in Vitamin D is linked to increased breast cancer risk so be sure to have your level check with a simple blood test.
  • Physical activity:  evidence shows that physical activity serves to decrease the risk.  A Women's Health Initiative Study showd that as little as 1.25-2.5 hours of brisk walking reduced a women's risk by 18%.  The more exercise, the further reduction in risk.
  • Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women, second only to lung cancer.  About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.

The American Cancer Society's estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2013 are:
  • About 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
  • About 64,640 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
  • About 39,620 women will die from breast cancer
Death rates have been falling since 1989, believed to be a result of early screening and detection, along with advances in treatments. It is estimated that there are approximately 2.8 million Breast Cancer Survivors living in the U.S.

Treating Acne with Acupuncture

Treating Acne with Acupuncture

New research shows that Acupuncture is an effective treatment for Acne.  43 Acupuncture acne trials with approximately 3,500 patients was reviewed. In the studies, several types of acne were investigated: vulgaris, papulopustular, inflammatory, adolescent and polymorphic. The researchers discovered that when acupuncture is added to a therapeutic regime, it synergistically enhances the medicinal benefits of the treatment protocol and leads to superior patient outcomes.

If you or someone you know suffers from Acne or Hormonal Skin Issues, encourage them to incorporate Acupuncture into their treatment.  (And it's on special at InnerMovement through October!)

The Health of our Children

Health & Wellness News
SEPTEMBER 2013

Greetings!

This month, our wellness topics speak to the health of our children and should be shared with every parent we know.  The younger generation in our country faces health risks of epidemic proportions, sadly from a system that should be protecting them.  American children are given more prescription medications than any other developed country and the U.S. list of recommended vaccines is larger than any other country.  Unfortunately, the state of health for U.S. Children isn't topping any lists.  According to the CDC, infant mortality rates are higher than most other developed countries (ranking 31st in 2012) and appears to be worsening.  A Washington Post article (dated 01/09/13) shows that our infant mortality rate is twice that of countries like Japan and Sweden.  Despite having the most expensive healthcare system, the United States ranks last overall compared to six other industrialized countries.  Why?

This very informational edition is jam-packed with critical research and explanations on what we are doing wrong with our kids.  It also gives ideas and insights into how to make some positive changes toward the health of our children.  We've also included some helpful tips for clearing up Acne naturally as Acne medications are one of the most widely used prescriptions given to teenagers, despite their known risks to the liver.   If you have a teen suffering from problematic skin, we now offer holistic skin care that combines topical skin treatments with Acupuncture.  The treatment is also highly effective on hormonal skin issues experienced at any age and on special through October.

I hope this edition inspires each of us to rethink any and all medications and for parents to research alternatives for their children.  We urge you to dedicate time to reading this edition in its entirety including our recommended links, watching the documentary films and sharing it with those you love.  Until our next adjustment...

Healing Power of Massage

Scientists have unlocked the secret behind the healing power of massage. The kneading eases sore muscles by turning off genes associated with inflammation and turning on those genes that help damaged muscles heal.

Both post-workout muscle tissue samples than in the pre-workout samples were studied and it was determined that massage suppresses the inflammation that follows exercise while promoting faster healing. Massaged muscle tissue was also studied and it shows that Massage Therapy could also potentially speed up recovery from muscle injury in athletes, as well as promote healing in patients with musculoskeletal problems.  Read the article in it's entirety HERE
