Food Ingredient Labels

photo via: FindYourBalanceHealth.com
Food labels are an important source of information about calories and the nutritional value of the foods we eat, however deciphering these can often present some challenges.  Here is some helpful information:
  • Ingredients are listed in the quantity in which they appear
  • Sugar can also be listed as high-fructose corn syrup or corn syrup, agave nectar, barley malt syrup or dehydrated cane juice
  • Hidden sugars:  Fructose, sucrose & dextrose
  • Salt can be listed by name or sodium benzoate, disodium or monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  • MSG can also be hidden as "yeast extract" or "soy protein isolate"
  • Trans-fats can be listed as hydrogenated oil
  • Artificial sweeteners: Sucralose, Saccharin, Aspartame, Acesulfame
  • Sodium Nitrites and Sodium Nitrates (these present a possible cancer risk)
  • Artificial colorings: Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 40, Red 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, and Orange B
  • Beware of "Natural Flavorings as many of these are processed using hexane, a toxic component of gasoline
  • "Castoreum", a substitute for vanilla, is made from the anal gland secretions of beavers
Aside from consuming fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and grass-fed, antibiotic-free meats; a good rule of thumb is to choose packaged foods with 5 or less ingredients.  And avoid any foods with High Fructose Sugar, Monosodium Glutamate, and any food that lists ingredients you do not recognize as a food.

A Word On GMOs, Genetically modified organisms

A Word On GMOs
Genetically modified organisms

Found in nearly 80 percent of American processed food, GMOs are produced when genes from one plant or animal are inserted into another plant or animal to create desirable traits. Nearly 90 percent of conventionally grown corn, canola, soybean, and sugar beet crops have been genetically modified. Add to that dairy from cows treated with the genetically engineered hormone rBGH, and meat and eggs from animals fed genetically modified feed. GMOs haven't been tested for long-term safety, and short-term studies have indicated serious concerns related to infertility and immune problems.

To sidestep GMOs, buy produce, dairy, and meats with the "USDA Organic" label; avoid most processed foods and high-fructose corn syrup; and look for the "Non-GMO Project Verified" seal.

Drink 16oz. of Water Right After you Wake Up

H2O Healthy Habit

Drink 16oz. of water right after you wake up
  • It fires up your metabolism. Drinking a large, glass of water after you wake up has been shown to fire up your metabolism by a whopping 24% for 90 minutes.
  • You're dehydrated when you wake up. You just went 7-8 hours without drinking any water! Even if your body isn't telling you that it's thirsty, it probably is.
  • Water helps your body flush out toxins. Getting fluids into your body right after your wake up will help your body flush out toxins first thing in the morning.
  • Your brain tissue is 75% water. When you're not properly hydrated, your brain operates on less fuel, and you can feel drained, or experience fatigue or mood fluctuations.
  • You'll eat less. One study showed that people who drink a glass of water before every meal lost 4.5 pounds over a three-month period, because it helps people feel full.

2015 Detox

Dr. Heidi Fennell
Greetings!

Happy New Year!  All of us here at InnerMovement are excited to commit to our health and wellness goals for 2015. Every January we participate and promote our Easy 3 Step Detox Program.  This program is our favorite way for our patients and staff to start the new year by gently removing toxins and optimizing our body systems.

Why a Detox? Every day we are bombarded with environmental toxins and the news is full of stories such as "U.S. Foods Banned In Other Countries" or how "Trans Fat May Hurt Your Memory" and more.  With all of the information available one thing is certain, your body will function better when your system is clean and I have not found a detox program that patients love more or with as many clinical benefits as our Easy 3 Step Bio-Detox Program.

The painful symptoms of biotoxicity and neurotoxicity are similar to the symptoms of a variety of other medical conditions, such as fibromyalgia, migraines or chronic headaches, depression, chronic fatigue, recurrent or chronic sinusitis, or other conditions that are unresponsive to conventional therapy. The symptoms of biotoxicity can also mimic those of some autoimmune diseases.

And if you're interested in losing weight in the New Year, cleansing the Liver with a thorough detox is key as the liver controls sugar metabolism, fat break down and is integral in boosting metabolism.  A clogged up, fatty liver will make weight loss an uphill battle.

This year I'm excited to announce that I'll be hosting Detox Program Meet-Up Groups!  Please read all about them below so you can join us.

Easy 3 Step Bio-Detox Program

Health & Wellness News
DECEMBER 2014

Greetings!

As we wind down 2014, we look forward to the opportunity to embrace our health by embarking on a personal wellness plan in the New Year. One of the best ways we've found is to partake in our Easy 3 Step Detox Initiative

Every January, we at InnerMovement promote and participate in a full 21-day Detox that includes 3 easy detoxifying steps.  As a result of the high levels of toxicity in our environment along with the damaging effects of our high sugar, processed, chemically ridden food supply, I highly recommend every patient commit to some form of thorough detoxification at least once per year.  I have not found a detox program that patients love more or with as many clinical benefits as the Easy 3 Step Bio-Detox Program.

Take the time to read more, get educated and decide for yourself. Included with our 3 Step Detox, we offer a gentle Aqua Detox Program which is also available as a solo treatment for patients in need of a gentler form of detoxification.
  • Step 1 focuses on eliminating inflammation, pain, stress & lethargy by following the "Eat Clean" diet full of fresh vegetables, fruit, lean protein, healthy oils, nuts & seeds. In Step 1, we avoid all processed foods, gluten and dairy products, alcohol, caffeine, sugar and refined oils. You won't believe how good you will feel once you're your system is free of this "junk".
  • Step 2 begins on day 7 of the "Eat Clean" diet, by adding nourishing meal replacement protein shakes and detoxifying herbal supplement packs. Step 2 is a thorough 14 day detoxification program designed to eliminate toxic buildup in the liver, gallbladder, kidneys and colon. This step jump starts weight loss, decreases allergies and prevents toxic buildup from making you sick!
  • Step 3 begins on day 21 (the completion of the detox) focusing on restoring intestinal balance and maintaining the high energy state of health you have just created with the Easy 3 Step Detox.
And this year, we're adding something new!

To kick-off the Detox Program and aid my patients throughout the process, I will be hosting meetings to lend program support, provide motivation, offer a Q&A session, and present a wellness community.
