Help us bring Christmas to a family in need

Please help us bring Christmas to a family in need!

InnerMovement Chiropractic patient and Social worker, Susan B. was heartbroken when she heard her client tell her four children that there would be no Christmas this year. This single mom living in East Los Angeles has recently been a victim of domestic violence and is barely getting by. When InnerMovement staff heard this story we decided to join together, with the help of all of you, to sponsor Christmas for this local family.
If you would like to help, please bring a wrapped present labeled for one of the family members below:
Single mom
14 y/o (teenage girl)
12 y/o (boy)
11 y/o (girl)
4 months (boy)

Let's come together and support this family in need, during
 the season of giving.
If you choose to participate with us, we will need the gift no later than Monday, December 19, 2011.

In the spirit of giving,

Say to yourself, "things are good".

Dr. Heidi
Over the last week, I've spent a lot of time pondering a thought I heard on my most recent weekend meditation retreat.  In responding to a student's complaints, the teacher said, "It takes a lot of courage to truly accept that things are good".  Of course this is not as easily applicable when major life challenges occur such as the loss of a loved one, major health issues, etc., but as I considered the concept, I was reminded of a quote by Marianne Williamson that states, "It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us."

Many times, I see patients that come to us with a chronic, often very painful condition.  We spend visit after visit, moving toward wellness as symptoms improve and ultimately go away.  Often times, patients seem unable to accept that they are well.  They insist on finding a new problem and seem disappointed when their spine has stabilized.  I think it is important for us to realize that even negative patterns can become a habit.  I believe that somehow as Marriane Williamson states we are more comfortable with distress and that it in fact DOES take courage to open our hearts, connect with others and rejoice in feeling good.

This Holiday Season, it might be a welcome change to fight our compulsion to stress and suffer, by simply saying to ourselves "things are good" thereby giving ourselves permission to ENJOY all of the goodness in our lives.

On behalf of the entire InnerMovement Wellness Team, we wish you and yours a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!!!

Until our next adjustment....

Vaccines: Get Informed.

One of the things we can be most thankful for is our choice to make informed decisions about the health care we choose for ourselves and our families.  That is why I am urging all parents to do some research before giving your daughter the Gardasil Vaccine.

The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) is demanding an investigation by the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) and the U.S. Congress into the fast-tracked licensure and government recommendation that all young girls and women receive the Gardasil vaccine.  This vaccine is recommended as protection against HPV virus (venereal warts) which can lead to cervical cancer but according to the NVIC, the risks outweigh the 'yet to be proven' benefits.  Routine pap-smears for our young girls and women are still the prevention of choice for this health concern.

Also to note, it has just been released that CA Governor Jerry Brown signed bill 'AB499' allowing 12-year-old children the ability to consent to being injected with Gardasil vaccines without their parents' knowledge!  It has been reported that young girls receiving this 'recommended' vaccine have experienced fainting, seizures, stroke, severe headaches, partial loss of vision and worsening symptoms after repeated vaccination.  And there have been 29 Gardasil death reports to the VAERS and clinical studies show the efficacy and safety of the vaccine have proven to be poor, to say the least.  Somehow our Governor and Policy Makers believe a 12-year-old girl can consent to her Pediatrician giving her an 'experimental' vaccine that could be devastating to her health.  This is where we need to be the watchdogs for our families health, by staying informed with every single vaccine decision as it is clearly not our governments or MD/pharmaceutical companies highest concern.

Please take the time become informed.  Don't trust any vaccine recommendations without asking some questions and doing your own research.  We all have a right to say "NO" to any vaccine if we feel it to be unnecessary or unsafe.

As a Doctor who has researched this topic extensively, and as a Parent,  I am here to help guide you with all of your health care including making vaccine decisions.

Until our next adjustment....

Yours in health,

Stay informed on how to make vaccines safer for your kids.

The Greater Good Documentary Film Screening

The Greater Good looks behind the fear, hype and politics that have polarized the vaccine debate in America today. The film re-frames the emotionally charged issue and offers, for the first time, the opportunity for a rational and scientific discussion on how to create a safer and more effective vaccine program.

InnerMovement is supporting screenings of this outstanding documentary beginning with their LA premier, October 14th, 2012. Dr. Jeanne Ohm (Dr Heidi's mentor and President of the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association) will be joining the producers for an after film showing Q&A with the audience.

School is back in session, continue to learn and grow.

Greetings!
dr heidi

School is back in session reminding us that it's important that we continue to learn and grow.  One of the things we should always be learning about is how to better care for ourselves.   If we are open to listening to our bodies, we find that we are provided with clues, signs and signals that help us make the right choices to have a heathier, more vibrant life.  How do we learn how to make the right choices?  We enlist a teacher, an expert, someone who is willing to share that information.

Our Licensed Massage Therapists are some of the experts on our Wellness Team. They are exceptionally skilled in providing pain relief, stress reduction and relaxation to our patients every day. Through the therapeutic process, they not only help us feel better, but help us learn HOW to feel better by helping us connect to our bodies.

Make sure you schedule routine self-care as it's never too late to learn something new about yourself. Think of it like this:  Self-care will help us become self-aware!

Until our next adjustment....

Nutrition News: Kid's Edition

Tips for Picky Eaters
carrot running

If you're worried about your children's nutrition or struggle with a picky eater, you're not alone.
Here are some tips to help avoid bad eating habits and encourage a lifetime of good nutrition & healthy habits!
  • Don't buy anything you don't want them to eat.  If it's not in the house, it makes it easier to avoid.
  • Enlist your child's help in the produce section while shopping.  It's a great time to talk about the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables.
  • Be creative by incorporating healthy foods into their favorite foods.
  • Don't offer dessert as a reward and even better, redefine fruit or yogurt as dessert.
  • If your child rejects the meal you've prepared, don't prepare anything else as this can encourage picky eating and power struggles over food.
  • No TV during mealtimes.  Not only are you removing distractions, you're removing the possibility of ads for sugary snacks and fast foods.
  • And most importantly... set a good example by eating a variety of healthy foods yourself.

Backpacks for Kids

Do the math by weight

Most kids today use backpacks to carry their books and notebooks to school, however it's important to reduce the amount of stress these can cause to the back to avoid painful back and neck injuries.
Medical professionals advise that individuals carry no more than 10-15% of their body weight on their backs.

This means a child weighing:
  • 50 lbs. should carry no more than 7.5 lbs.
  • 80 lbs. should carry no more than 12 lbs.
  • 100 lbs. should carry no more than 15 lbs.
  • 130 lbs. should carry no more than 19.5 lbs.
  • 150 lbs. should carry no more than 22.5 lbs.
There are also many wheeled backpack options available that alleviate the weight being carried on your child's back.

School is back in session

Greetings!
dr heidi

School is back in session and families are gearing up for busy schedules, homework, after school activities and the hectic pace of our 21st century lifestyles.  To ensure that your child has a healthy and successful year, it will be important for them to have their back aligned and balanced and on track. I wish more parents understood that getting a spinal check-up is just as important as getting a dental checkup.  Most parents I talk to admit to having their child's teeth checked regularly but have never had a spinal checkup for their kids.  The spine protects and encases the nervous system and misalignment's can lead to dysfunction. So a healthy spine equals a healthy body and we all want that for our kids. For more info visit www.icpa4kids.com

This month we are offering spinal checkups and scoliosis screenings for all children related to any of our patients.  We would love to check your kids, grandchildren, nieces or nephews next time you are in!  (see below for more info)

Hydrate for Health

Nutrition News
Hydrate for Health
water droplet heart

Our body weight is comprised of 60-70 percent water so we need to stay hydrated to keep our bodies running at their best as hydration affects our energy levels, digestion, regularity and blood pressure.

Dehydration slows the activity of enzymes which leads to feelings of fatigue.  In fact, the slightest reduction can lower our metabolism.  When we don't drink enough liquids, the digestive process is impaired which leads to slower elimination, systemic toxicity and inflammation.  Chronic dehydration results in a thickening of our blood which causes our blood vessels to contract.  Our bodies must work that much harder to push blood through our veins, resulting in elevated blood pressure.

So what's the best way to stay properly hydrated?  While those successfully marketed sports drinks can be tempting, water is truly the best way to hydrate your body.  Eight 8-ounce glasses a day is recommended by the Mayo Clinic

We've all heard this before, but do we do it?  Here are some easy ways to make your water more tasty and boost your nutrition!

Lemon water:  Add a lemon slice and some lemon juice to your water.  The beauty of lemon water is that it is tasty, refreshing and best of all, alkalising.  The value of eating lemons is reported by Jethro Kloss, a pioneer in natural herbal remedies, in his book Back to Eden: "The medicinal value of the lemon is as follows: It is an antiseptic, or is an agent that prevents sepsis [the presence of pathogenic bacteria] or putrefaction [decomposition of tissue]. It is also anti-scorbutic, a term meaning a remedy which will prevent disease and assist in cleansing the system of impurities."

Cucumber water:  You often see this at the spa and it is delicious but did you know that cucumber water has some great health benefits?  The flesh of cucumbers is primarily composed of water but also contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid, both of which help soothe skin irritations and reduce swelling. Cucumber juice is often recommended as a source of silica to improve the complexion and health of the skin, plus cucumber's high water content makes it naturally hydrating a must for glowing skin.

Are you looking for a water alternative?
Coconut water is fat-free, cholesterol-free, low-calorie, super-hydrating, naturally rich in electrolytes.  Over long periods of exercise, the body needs to replace electrolyte salts that are naturally sweated out, especially potassium; its absence can cause muscle cramping and delayed recovery time after exercise.

Orange juice (ideally not from concentrate) is a very good natural source of potassium too.

Another way to keep hydrated is to incorporate more water-rich foods into your diet such as: tomatoes, peaches, pineapple, melon, strawberries, oranges, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, squash and bell peppers.  And believe it or not,  a potato is roughly 80 percent water.

So ... Cheers and drink to your health!

Trigger Points: answers about pain

Trigger Points:  answers about pain

People often ask if their pain is from a muscle or joint issue.  The truth is that muscles and joints are so intimately related that you cannot separate them from a physiological point of view.  Our joints are comprised of  many  structural, muscular and neurological components that are interdependent on one another.

Most people have areas of constricted or tight muscles that can be seen with bad posture, chronic & repetitive over-use, and emotional stress.  These constricted muscles affect our  our posture, ability to move and our body's ability to function optimally.  Our muscular health directly affects the nervous system, blood flow, lymphatic drainage and our overall health.

One key factor in muscular health that can lead to pain and dysfunction is known as a trigger point.  Trigger points are hyper-irritable spots that are associated with knots in tight muscles.  When these points are pressed upon, they can be tender in addition to referring pain to areas distant to the points being pressed upon.

Here are some common trigger points:
trigger points
The complex relationship of interdependence between our bodies systems is why the combination of massage with chiropractic adjustments work so well together.  Addressing multiple, complementary systems aids in not only pain relief but optimal health.

Healing & Curative Properties of Bamboo

An Eastern Perspective

with Veronica Sanchez, LAc, RN

Healing & Curative Properties of Bamboo
bambooWhen most of us look at bamboo, we don't think of it as medicine but it's medicinal properties have been used in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) for thousands
of years. The leaves of certain bamboo plants are used as a stimulant, aromatic and tonic. They are useful in counteracting spasmodic disorders, and arrest secretion or bleeding. They are also an effective aphrodisiac. The leaves do not have any prominent taste.

Stomach Disorders:  The leaves are beneficial in the treatment of stomach troubles. They are useful in strengthening the stomach and promoting its action. The young shoots of the tree are also useful in stomach disorders. Pickled or cooked, they serve as an appetizer. In many parts of India , the leaves of the tree are used in the form of decoction to treat diarrhea. So, add them to a salad or enjoy them in a stir-fired dish!

Respiratory Disorders:  Decoction of the shoots should be taken with a tablespoon of honey once or twice daily for those with a sore throat.

Menstrual Disorders:  A decoction of the nodes of the bamboo stem and leaves promotes and regulates menstrual periods; especially for painful periods prior to menstruation.

Wounds and Ulcers:  A poultice of the tender shoots is used for cleaning wounds.  A decoction or juice of the fresh bamboo leaves is applied as a medicine in such ulcers.

Dosage of Bamboo:
The juice of 35 grams of fresh leaves may be taken twice daily either alone or mixed with any other juice. The decoction extracted from 70 grams of leaves may be used by itself. About 120 ml of the juice extracted from very tender shoots may be taken twice daily.  *As always, we recommend you seek professional advice before taking any type of supplement or remedy.

Bamboo Massage

Happy Summer everyone!

While you've been out having fun in the sun, we've been preparing for the launch of our new Bamboo Massage.  This massage caught my attention from the first time I heard about it.

Basically, the massage treatment is performed using hand crafted bamboo rods that are heated and oiled to glide smoothly over the body.  From years of receiving massage as an ongoing part of my wellness routine, I often felt that if I could only have someone roll a rolling pin over my muscles to work out all the kinks and tension.  The Bamboo Massage is just what I was wishing for and with the addition of the soothing feel of heat you leave feeling like dough from head to toe! :)

So far, the massage has been a hit!  The Massage staff loves it because the bamboo tools make it easy to work deeper into the muscles and the heat is soothing to both client and therapist.  Flora, Krista and all the practitioners in the office tried the Bamboo Massage and they all gave it an excited thumbs up plus booked a second.  And last month we tested the Massage on a specific group of patients with rave reviews (see below).  So, with all of the overwhelming positive feedback, we are sure your going to love it too!  InnerMovement is the only Wellness center in the greater LA area offering the Bamboo Massage, so be the first to try it and bring your friends along too!  Until our next adjustment....

Core Stretch

by Dr. Heidi FennellD.C., FICPA

Lower back pain affects 80 percent of Americans.  It is the most common reason for missed work and the overuse of pain meds.  Why is low back pain so prevalent? The answer lies simply in our most common activity of daily living: sitting.  In America, we sit while we eat, while we work, in our cars in traffic, while we watch our favorite TV show and so on.  Most of us sit more than we do any other activity.

All of this sitting weakens our core and tightens our hip flexors, the muscles that connect our femur to our lower lumbar vertebrae and are responsible for hip flexion.  While sitting, the hip flexors are in constant contraction and over time, this constant contraction leads to improper biomechanics of the lumbar spine and hip joints which results in pain.   Chiropractic adjustments are extremely helpful in correcting the biomechanical issues caused by this problem and alleviating the pain.  But in order to keep the alignment holding strong and prevent future episodes of pain, patients must stretch the hip flexors (most notably the Psoas muscle), with a stretch known at the "Runners Stretch".
 runners stretch
How to do the "Runners Stretch":
Kneel on the right knee with the left foot planted in front of you.  Now pull your belly button to your spine (very important) and lean into the left foot until you feel a stretch on the front of the right hip.  For added stretch, maintain the belly button pulled in and reach your right arm overhead.  Hold stretch for 6 deep breathes and repeat on other side.

Do this stretch daily as part of your morning or evening stretching routine and begin to watch low back tension lessen over time.

Chiropractic for men

Greetings!
Statistically, men seek Chiropractic care half as often as women. But also statistically, men suffer from more episodes of low back pain than women.  How does that compute?  I wonder if the hero complex has something to do with it?  Every hero from the theatre to our history books bravely suffers for the ones he loves, even to the death.  Maybe stories like this have left an impression on men that suffering is brave and heroic.  And that admitting pain is weak and wimpy.  We are often unaware how this type of unconscious programming affects us.  That may explain why so many men continue to suffer with back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain etc without seeking treatment.   But the truth is that we want our men to live to their fullest potential not to suffer.  We love those strong, heroic qualities but know they are best expressed without pain and injury.

This Father's Day, I'd like to make an effort to get more men under care.  There is nothing romantic or heroic about continuing to suffer from any type of pain.  Especially, when there is a compassionate team willing & able to help!  So from now until June 19th let's get all the men in our lives to know that we want them to feel their best.  And that it's time the hero makes an appointment to care for his spine!  Until our next adjustment....

Benefits of Chiropractic during Pregnancy

Benefits of Chiropractic during Pregnancy
More and more pregnant women are looking for ways to improve their experience during pregnancy and delivery.  Many expectant mothers are prone to back pain, neck pain and other issues throughout their pregnancy as their bodies make very dramatic physiological and endocrinological changes during this time.  What many women are finding out is that chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to help cope with the stress that is placed on the body amidst all the changes.  Furthermore, it is appealing to pregnant women who want to avoid taking medication and may even have an effect on reducing labor time.

Here is some research on the topic:

"An interview of 170 consecutive female patients: of the 170 pregnancies with reported back pain, 72% also reported back labor...The treated group experienced less pain during labor.Eighty-four per-cent of patients receiving spinal manipulative therapy [ADJUSTMENTS] reported relief of back pain during pregnancy.  There was significantly less likelihood of back labor when spinal manipulative therapy was administered during pregnancy."

"The hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy can change the shape of the spinal curves and overall posture which can affect organ systems.  In this study Dr. Fallon describes her work with 65 women who received chiropractic care from at least the tenth week of pregnancy through labor and delivery.  These women experienced mean labor times significantly reduced compared to controls."

Pre & Post-Natal Massage

Pre & Post-Natal Massage

Therapeutic bodywork benefits
by Christy Manchester, L.M.T. & Proud Mom

As individuals we want what is best for ourselves.  As mothers we want what is best for our children. During Pregnancy, that means double duty!  Pregnancy massage is not only good for our changing bodies, but it also benefits the life growing within.  Everything we do and feel as an expectant mother is felt by our babies. If we are stressed and uncomfortable our baby feels it. Think about it, at no other time in your life will you be as connected as you are now.

Women's bodies go through a myriad of changes during pregnancy both emotionally and physically. Swedish massage is most recommended for pregnancy as it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts during pregnancy. By reducing anxiety, decreasing symptoms of depression, increasing circulation and relieving muscle aches and pains, you are maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for your unborn child.

We also want a safe labor and delivery and want our newborn to be healthy. Studies show that therapeutic massageincorporated into regular prenatal care can improve labor outcomes and newborn health. In the past 10 years studies have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress are significantly altered, leading to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health. These changes led to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications, such as low birth weight.

Once we are holding our little miracle in our arms, our body begins to recuperate from the changes and stresses of pregnancy, labor and delivery as well as the new stresses on the body that comes with caring for our newborn. Post-natal massage gives nurturing and emotional support to help regain lost energy, helps restore our body to it's pre-pregnancy condition, and helps relieve the muscle aches and pains that result from nursing, holding and carrying our newborn.

Pregnancy massage is a safe and proven technique to add to your regular pre and post-natal care. For more information visit the American Pregnancy Associationwebsite and click on pregnancy wellness.

For Mother's Day, we honor the first stage of motherhood: Pregnancy.

Greetings!
dr heidi

This Mother's Day and month of May we are honoring the first stage of motherhood: Pregnancy.  The miracle of conception, the intricacy of fetal development and the process of birth mark stages where optimal wellness and spinal health are paramount.  And because of this, I feel my most meaningful work occurs when I'm working with a pregnant mother. This is a time that I not only get a chance to help the new mom with the aches, pains and challenges of pregnancy but also have the opportunity to impact the health of a new life.  Many people are unaware that Chiropractic, when applied to the pregnant patient, can not only help with pain but is highly effective in turning breech babies as well as improving labor and delivery outcomes.

In fact,  I had the pleasure of turning another breech presentation just last week!  The Mom was scheduled for C-section and through a referral from one of my dedicated patients, the new mom ended up in my office.  Within 2 visits, baby had turned, scheduled C-section was canceled and mom and baby can have a natural birth as was innately planned.  There is so much benefit from Chiropractic care during this precious time!  And although OB/Gyn referrals for Chiropractic care are increasing each day, many people still don't know we can help. So, this month join us in honoring the pregnant mom's by letting them know Chiropractic is a safe and effective option for them during pregnancy.  To learn more, please visit our website and/or take a look at the incredible research www.ICPA4kids.com

Cellphone Effects on Brain Activity

Cellphone Effects on Brain Activity
Recently, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a studcellphone illustrationy showing that the use of cellphones alters brain activity in the part of the brain near the antenna. Though "experts" are urging people not to draw any conclusions regarding cellphone use and cancer, to the unaltered mind, there is no way that this radiation can be anything but detrimental to our health.  While experts figure out exactly how much of a link there is between cellphones and brain cancer, you can use some caution (and common sense) to be on the safe side.

For more information and suggestions, read the following article in the New York Times.
